Welcome to Historic Greater Syracuse!
Much of the old Erie Canal (above left) is now set aside in state and local parks with long, level trails that are great for a relaxed walk or a bike ride. The aqueduct (above left) in Camillus was built between 1838 and 1831 to carry the canal's water over Nine Mile Creek. Over 98% of the original stonework is still intact.
Sims Store (above left) in Camillus was once a general store and departure point for passengers on the canal. Destroyed by fire and rebuilt, it now houses a museum and serves as park headquarters. In the city of Syracuse, as the automobile gained ascendency, the canal was filled in. It once flowed between the two buildings shown here (above right).
The Erie Canal Museum (above left and right) is located at 318 Erie Boulevard East. Admission is free, with donations gratefully accepted. Kids love the boat replica and can keep busy at the activity stations upstairs.
